News Release April 26, 2005
Students Set Up 'Shack City' At Boise State Boise State
University and the Volunteer Services Board will host the second annual
Shack City event at 6 p.m. Friday, April 29, on the Quad. This event was
rescheduled from its original date on April 8. Shack City is
an effort to raise awareness about homelessness in Idaho and around the
world. Participants will construct a “city” out of cardboard and packing
tape with help from an expert on makeshift housing. They will then spend the
night in the city, and are advised to bring blankets, sleeping bags and
pillows. Dinner will be
served on Friday and there will be guest speakers on hand to educate
participants about Idaho’s homeless situation. Music will be provided by the
local band Somewhere Far on Friday night. On Saturday morning, participants
will be encouraged to join in a Service Saturday event where they will have
the opportunity to volunteer at local non-profit agencies such as the Idaho
Foodbank. Participants will be served lunch during the teardown of the city
at 1-3 p.m on Saturday. People who are
interested in participating should call the Volunteer Services Board at
426-4240. The event is open to students and to the public, and all building
materials will be supplied. Contact: Sarah Bednar, Hunger and Homelessness Issues Coordinator, (208) 841-1402, poverty@boisestate.edu
