This Week At Boise State (May 1-7)

 

The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of May 1-7. Please note that all events are subject to change. For updated information on all events, go to http://events.boisestate.edu.

SUNDAY, MAY 1

Cinco de Mayo Celebration. Student Union Visitor Lot. Noon-6 p.m. Features a car show, authentic Mexican food, folkloric dancing, Miss Cinco de Mayo Pageant and more. Presented by the Organización de Estudiantes Latino-Americanos. All events are free; food prices vary. Call 426-5950.
 

Concerto Aria Concert. Morrison Center Main Hall. 7:30 p.m. Student winners from the 2005 Concerto Competition join the Boise State Symphony Orchestra to perform an exciting array of vocal and instrumental music. Tickets are $5 general, $3 for seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.
 

MONDAY, MAY 2

Treasure Valley Concert Band. Boise High School, 1010 W. Washington. 7:30 p.m. The Treasure Valley Concert band presents an “Opera to Hollywood” concert, featuring selections from “Phantom of the Opera,” music from John Williams’ “Catch Me If You Can” and works from Australian composer David Stanhope. Free. Call 426-3980.

 

TUESDAY, MAY 3

Tuba Euphonium Ensemble Concert. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 general, $3 for seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.

 

MAY 4-7

Crazy For You.” Morrison Center Main Hall. 7:30 p.m., May 4-7; 2 p.m., May 7. “Crazy For You” is an adaptation of the George and Ira Gershwin 1930 hit “Girl Crazy.” Crammed with standards like “I Got Rhythm” and “Embraceable You,” the production portrays the adventures of a stage-struck playboy in a Nevada mining town, where romance, mistaken identities and show-stopping musical numbers all add up to irresistible fun. MAY 4-11

Civic Engagement in Action exhibit. Student Union North Lounge. 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. Poster exhibit by student participants in Boise State’s Service-Learning program. Students will be available to speak about their posters and projects from 8:30-10 a.m., May 9, and 6-7:30 p.m., May 11. Presented by Service-Learning. Free. Call 426-2380.

 

THURSDAY, MAY 5

Fettuccine Forum. Rose Room, 718 W. Idaho Street. 5:30 p.m. Boise State emeritus history professor Bob Simsdiscusses “Boise and a Sense of Place.” Presented by the Idaho Center for History and Politics. Free. Call 426-3701.

 

FRIDAY, MAY 6

Spring Fling. Julia Davis Park. Noon-9 p.m. The 27th annual Spring Fling features musical performers including Reel Big Fish, Raining Jane, The Clumsy Lovers, Enation and more. The event also features games and activities including video-making, remote control car racing, a gyroscope and an obstacle course. Tickets are $5 general and free for Boise State students, faculty and staff. Call 426-4636.
 

Immigration lecture. Student Union Hatch Ballroom. 9:40 a.m. Dr. Hondagneu-Sotelo, a professor of sociology from the University of Southern California and expert on Hispanic immigration, will speak about “Mexican Immigration and New Destinations: The Problem or Promise of a New America?” Free. MAY 6-7

Spring Dance Concert. Morrison Center Stage II. 7:30 p.m. Featuring the work of 17 student choreographers as well as faculty members Marla Hansen and Echo Waldron. The concert includes eclectic works that are designed to inspire and entertain. Presented by the Department of Theatre Arts. Tickets are $5 general and $3 for Boise State students. Call 426-3980.
 

MAY 7-9

Clay and Fire sale and exhibit. Gallery I (Liberal Arts Building). 10 a.m.-5 p.m. A biannual tradition at Boise State, Clay and Fire includes hundreds of ceramic pieces – ranging from elegant to exotic – made by Boise State students, faculty and alumni. A portion of the proceeds go to Boise State’s Visiting Artists in Ceramics program. Call 426-3994.
