and 6-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 11 Where: Boise State University Student Union North Lounge, second floor between the Bergquist Lounge and the Hatch Ballroom Who: Boise State Service-Learning students The Civic Engagement in Action professional poster exhibition will illustrate that students at Boise State don’t just sit in a classroom. Students from classes in psychology, technical writing, personal health, community nursing and mechanical engineering will display and discuss their projects of community service May 5-11 in the North Lounge of the Student Union Building (second floor between the Bergquist Lounge and the Hatch Ballroom). Students will be on hand to discuss their projects at two public receptions, 8:30-10 a.m. on May 9 and 6-7:30 p.m. on May 11.
Students perform 25 hours of community service during the semester to fulfill the Service-Learning component of their class. Linda Anooshian’s Capstone Perspectives on Psychology Issues students are working hands-on with the clients of area community agencies such as Boise Parks and Recreation, the Agency for New Americans and El Ada Community Action Partnership.
Boise State offers 70-80 Service-Learning classes each year, connecting more than 50 faculty, 100 community agencies and 1,500 students. Service-Learning is a central component in Boise State’s civic engagement initiative, which encourages students, faculty and staff to participate in civic, social and environmental activities in their communities.
A study by the Higher Education Research Institute found that performing community service as part of a course significantly increases academic performance, commitment to activism, racial understanding, choice of a service career and plans to participate in service after college.
