News Release May 2, 2005 SIX BOISE STATE PROFESSORS HONORED AS 2005 PRESIDENT’S RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP AWARD RECIPIENTS Six Boise State University professors were honored today by President Bob Kustra as the 2005 President’s Research and Scholarship award recipients. The awards program, now in its second year, recognizes Boise State professors who have established themselves as outstanding researchers and scholars. The 2005 recipients are: Jake Baker, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Baker holds 100 granted or pending patents in integrated circuit design. He has authored or co-authored four textbooks in the past six years, and has consulted for various companies and laboratories, including Micron Technology, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and the Tower ASIC Design Center. In 2001, Baker was awarded a five-year, $3 million grant under the Department of Defense Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative program and he also collaborates on several other federally funded grants. Baker joined Boise State’s faculty in 2000. Jim Belthoff, Department of Biology. Belthoff is a key researcher in dispersal biology who has garnered more than $420,000 in grants and contracts from the National Science Foundation, Bureau of Land Management, Idaho Department of Fish and Game and the Environmental Science and Research Foundation. He has published 24 articles in peer-reviewed journals since joining Boise State’s faculty in 1993, plus another 14 prior to arriving at Boise State. Each year, he is asked to review about 20 manuscripts, many of which are from the top journals in biology. Belthoff was also lauded for his effectiveness as a graduate student adviser. Cindy Clark, Department of Nursing. Clark is a nationally recognized expert in the areas of adolescent substance abuse, adolescent development, youth violence prevention, adolescent suicide, and substance abuse among practicing nurses. She has had about 50 papers published in professional journals or presented at conferences. Clark received the 2005 Foundation Scholar Award for Service and the 2003 Larry Selland Humanitarian Award. A member of the BSU faculty since 1995, she also is the recipient of a teaching award from the Associated Students of Boise State. Craig Hemmens, Department of Criminal Justice Administration. Hemmens’ publications during the past nine years include seven books, 94 journal articles and law reviews, 20 book chapters, 30 book reviews, and more than 50 other publications. He has an additional three books approaching completion. Hemmens earned a law degree from the North Carolina Central University School of Law. He has given 65 presentations at national and regional conferences and was selected as editor of the Journal of Criminal Justice Education. Hemmens, who joined the Boise State faculty in 1995, serves as academic director of the university’s legal assistant program. Jack Hourcade, Department of Special Education. Hourcade was honored by the Associated Students of Boise State University as the 2005 outstanding faculty member. He is the author of two books and has edited four others. Hourcade has authored or co-authored 61 publications in refereed journals and has made presentations at 43 international and national conferences and 16 regional conferences. He joined Boise State’s faculty in 1987 and has been awarded several grants during his tenure here. Kip Krumwiede, Department of Accountancy. Krumwiede’s research interests include management accounting innovations, performance measurement evaluation decisions and evaluation of stressed firms. He has published 11 refereed articles in journals and has received three certificates of merit from the Institute of Management Accountants. He was the recipient of an IMA grant to travel to Germany for an introductory study of German-speaking firms’ cost accounting methods. He joined Boise State’s faculty in 2003. -30-
