THE ARBITER NAMED BEST COLLEGE NEWSPAPER IN IDAHO

The Idaho Press Club Saturday night named The Arbiter the best college newspaper in the state. The Arbiter is Boise State University’s independent, twice-weekly student newspaper.

At a ceremony in the Owyee Plaza Hotel, Press Club officers presented The Arbiter staff a plaque for first place in the student newspaper General Excellence category for 2004. General Excellence is the award Idaho television and radio stations, newspapers, magazines, public relations departments and Web sites use for bragging rights for the year. The Arbiter last won the General Excellence crown in 2002.

The University of Idaho Argonaut won second place in General Excellence, and the Brigham Young University-Idaho Scroll won third place.

The Arbiter won 15 awards among 15 categories, including six firsts. According to judges, The Arbiter was “hands down the paper to beat.” The stories are enticing and the layouts are beyond strong, the judges’ wrote.
Monica Price, The Arbiter’s former news editor, won first place in the Watchdog/Investigative category for her story titled “ASBSU Senate passes bill to raise salaries without debate.”
Former production chief Mike Roche and former designer Ben Wilson won first place in Page Design for “Against all odds;” “Flu shots;; and “Face-off 9.”
Roche, Wilson and photographer Krista Adams won first place in Graphics for “Home Improvement…;” “ASBSU weaves new…” and “Sold! Taco Bell!”
Photographer Stan Brewster won first place in Photography for “Memphis Mermaid;” “Oops! I missed;” and “Intentional Foul.”
The Arbiter staff won first place in Special Purpose Student Web Site for its online calendar, www.arbiteronline.com/vcalendar/
Aubrey Salazar won second place in Column Writing — “I’m sure you could talk the masses into just about anything. Let your personality and voice shine through a little more and you could be Idaho’s answer to Maureen Dowd,” the judges commented.
Amber Fuger won second place in Sports News Report for “Home Improvement – BSU Athletics studies feasibility.” The judges called Fuger’s story an “ideal example of sports news writing.”
The Arbiter staff won third place in the Web Site General Excellence category, and photographer Richae Swanbeck won third place in Photography for “Changing of the Guard,” “Mono Jeet” and “Vinyl.”

The Arbiter’s current news editor, Randall Post, won an honorable mention in the category of General News Story for his story, “Visiting professor accused of plagiarism.” Other Arbiter writers who won honorable mentions include Managing Editor Kyle Gorham, for “ASBSU budget funds centers, but Morriss draws criticism regardless,” incoming Editor-in-Chief Mary Grace Lucas for “Muslim students face challenges post 9/11” in the category of Serious Feature; and Sports Editor Trevor Horn in the Sports News Report section, for ”An undefeated record looks promising for a team with a few question marks.” The Arbiter staff also won an honorable mention in the Headline category.

The Idaho Press Club is dedicated to improving the practice of journalism in Idaho. They organize workshops annually to assist media professionals improve their skills. The IPC’s annual award ceremony recognizes the best in Idaho journalism.

The Arbiter’s Editor in Chief Mary Dawson said she was beyond pleased with the results from this year’s awards ceremony. “It’s nice to see the hard work the staff has done this year come together.”
Aside from last weekend’s statewide recognition for the news staff, The Arbiter’s business staff recently brought back three national awards. On April 4, the paper took home Best Display Ad Campaign (first place), Best Newspaper Promotion Ad/Color (second place), and Best Classified Group Presentation (third place) from the College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers national convention in New Orleans. CNBAM represents over 100 different newspapers across the country, including such large schools as Columbia, Michigan State and UCLA.
