News Release May 4, 2005 LEGAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT GRADUATES FIND EXCELLENT CAREER OPPORTUNITIES; PROGRAM NOW AVAILABLE IN NAMPA
Twenty years
ago, the path to working in a law office was largely undefined. With no real
educational requirements, legal secretaries were skilled typists who learned
to prepare legal documents on the job. Today, individuals with an associate of applied science degree (completed in just 24 months) are trained legal administrative assistants, well-paid professionals who find career opportunities not only in traditional law offices but also in large corporations, insurance companies, government offices and traditional court systems.
Starting in
August, aspiring legal administrative assistants can complete the first year
of a 24-month training program in Nampa at Boise State Universitys Canyon
County Center on Nampa-Caldwell Boulevard. The second-year work is competed
on the Boise campus. Demand for
this new option is expected to be high, and prospective students are
encouraged to apply now for admission and financial aid. Career advisers are
available to meet with prospective students of all ages and abilities. Our graduates find great jobs, said Sue Madarieta, manager of the program. Once they graduate with an associate of applied science degree and go to work, some students choose to attend Boise State University part-time to pursue a bachelor of applied science degree with an emphasis in paralegal studies.
A skilled
legal administrative assistant can average $15 an hour after just a year or
two on the job. Paralegals typically earn higher wages. The Selland
College of Applied Technologys Legal Administrative Assistant program is
being filled on a first come, first served basis. For more information or to
schedule an appointment with a career adviser in Nampa, call Boise State
Universitys student services office at 426-4700. -30-
