News Release May 4, 2005 BOISE STATE STUDENTS EXCEL AT SPEECH SHOWCASE
Four students from the Boise area and one from Dayton were named winners in
the April 27 Communication 101 Speech Showcase at Boise State University,
following three rounds of competition
Natalie Marti, a local hairdresser and a junior majoring in social work,
spoke persuasively on avoiding “Drinking and Driving.” Natalie won
recognition as the top competitor and received a $200 scholarship.
Christopher Higgins, an ex-Marine and sophomore kinesiology major,
instructed the 500-plus audience members in how to defend themselves against
attackers, to earn the second spot and $150 in scholarship funds.
Third place winner was Leannda Gustke, a freshman studying mass communication.
She won a $100 scholarship. Stacy Hollingsworth, a freshman marketing major
from Boise, persuaded audience members to be more polite with cell phone use
and was awarded a $50 scholarship. Finally, Ky Nelson, from Dayton, won the
impromptu speaking round and a $25 scholarship. Thirteen
students spoke in the showcase, representing 45 separate COMM 101 classes.
The following instructors served as mentors to help prepare students for the
competition: Tim Ellis, Matt VanderBoegh, Rebecca Robideaux and Melissa
Klassen. In addition, the following served as judges: state legislator Anne Pasley-Stuart,
attorney Paul Winward, K-HITs radio personality Margo Vaughn, NHA Impression
Management president Andy Hedden-Nicely, and U.S. Bank vice president Rob
Perez. Dawn Craner, associate professor of communication, directed the
