News Release May 25, 2005 Industrial Maintenance Training Program Now Enrolling at Boise State University in Nampa When production workers encounter problems with the machines they operate, the first person they call is an industrial maintenance technician. A broken machine can cost a company thousands of dollars in downtime, create risk of employee injury and cause extensive ongoing problems for a production line. Every day, these technicians are the “rising stars” of manufacturing, building and related facility operations. They troubleshoot equipment failures, solve problems and repair critical components, knowing their skills help other employees remain productive and ensure the company continues to prosper. The Selland College of Applied Technology at Boise State University is now accepting enrollments for fall semester in the Industrial Maintenance Program, offered in Nampa. There are 12 seats available and program coordinators expect them to fill fast. “The training is relevant, to the point and hands-on,” said Mike Lyons, center manager for Manufacturing Engineering Technology at Boise State. “By the time a student graduates, he or she will have excellent skills and lots of experience. They will be a great asset to any prospective employer.” Representatives from the industry serve as advisers to the program to ensure skill training meets local needs. Graduates are proficient and cross-trained with welding, machining, electrical and mechanical skills and have learned pneumatics and hydraulic system operations. Jobs are available locally with starting pay ranging from $9-$16 per hour. Experienced technicians with many years of experience can expect to earn up to $30 per hour. Prospective students are encouraged to call 426-4700 to make an appointment with a career adviser to discuss the program options and file for financial aid. The program will be filled on a first come, first served basis and is open to anyone regardless of previous educational experience.
