News Release May 26, 2005 TRIO Dissemination Partnership Provides College Prep Camp For Boise Students Local students who are part of the TRIO Dissemination Partnership will get a chance to test out university life June 6-17 at Boise State University and other colleges in Idaho and California. Limited-income students from TRIO partner sites — the Boys and Girls Club of Ada County Mosley Center, Franklin Elementary, Fort Boise High and Koelsch Elementary — will get an opportunity to learn more about college and career options. From June 6-10, the program’s fifth- and sixth-grade students will attend on-campus workshops at Boise State regarding college preparation, career exploration, goal setting and how to use the Idaho Career Information System. Students will get to be honorary college students for a week; they will even eat lunch at the resident hall dining area, the TableRock Café, each day. They also will visit the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls to learn about various two- and four-year college and career prep options, and they will develop team-building skills while participating in the Northwest Nazarene College Challenge Course. From June 13-17, ninth- and 11th-grade students from the TRIO sites will visit southern California to learn about culture and college and career options. The participants will spend the first two days on the Boise State campus developing goal setting skills, familiarizing themselves with college terms, exploring career options and learning about financial aid. On the third day, the group will leave for southern California to visit four major learning institutions: University of California, Los Angeles; California State University, Long Beach; Santa Monica College; and the University of Southern California. They also will visit the Aquarium of the Pacific and the Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance. In addition, each group of students will document their experiences on video. Jason Sears, technology director for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Ada County, will then teach them how to turn their videos into a DVD format using a variety of computer programs. The partnership between the universities and the organizations involved in the TRIO program came about through the federally funded, three-year TRIO Dissemination Partnership (TDP) grant. The federal TRIO programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes many outreach and support programs targeted to serve and assist low-income, first-generation college students and students with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from elementary school to postbaccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects and a dissemination partnership program to encourage the replication or adaptation of successful practices of TRIO projects at institutions and agencies that do not have TRIO grants. TRIO programs in Idaho include Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound, Student Success Program, Ronald McNair Postbacculaureate Achievement Program, TRIO Dissemination Partnership and the Educational Opportunity Center.
