News Release May 27, 2005 Boise State Extended Studies Program Offers Archaeology Class, Epidemiology Workshop in June
The Boise
State University Division of Extended Studies will offer two science-based
courses in June. The first,
“GIS Applications in Archaeology,” taught by Sharon Plager, is for students
interested in building the necessary skills and knowledge to incorporate GIS
technology into archaeological research and cultural resource management
projects. The course is scheduled from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday through
Friday, June 6-17. It will include hands-on exercises centered on project
planning, data collection, post-processing, data analysis and map
production. It will involve classroom and laboratory instruction as well as
in-field data collection. The cost for three undergraduate credits is $573.55; the cost for three graduate credits is $690.55.
The second workshop, “Teaching Scientific Process through Epidemiology,” will be taught by Elizabeth Hannah and will introduce students to the EXCITE program, a collection of teaching materials developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that explore public health and epidemiology, the science used by “disease detectives” everywhere. Students will learn about the scientific method of inquiry, basic biostatistics and outbreak investigation. EXCITE adapts readily to team teaching across a variety of subjects, including mathematics, social studies, history and physical education.
The two-day health studies workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 10-11. Students may register for one undergraduate credit for $187.85 or one graduate credit for $226.85.
