National Guard Soldier In Iraq Finds Success Taking Online Courses

Idaho National Guard specialist Kent Ellsworth of Rigby catches some study time from atop a Humvee before he heads out on patrol in an undisclosed location in northern Iraq. Ellsworth, who enrolled in an online anatomy and physiology course at Boise State University spring semester while serving on active duty in Iraq, sent an e-mail to the biology department to commend biology professor Richard McCloskey for his outstanding support.

Text of Ellsworth's email:

I am writing to you to tell you of Dr. Richard McCloskey, the professor for the Anatomy and Physiology online course B-228.I have taken several online courses, however this was the first paced course I have taken. I was a little hesitant to take a paced course since I am currently serving with the Idaho National Guard in Iraq. I expressed my concerns to Dr. McCloskey and he assured me that he would do what he could to accommodate my varying schedule.

Well, that turned out to be quite an understatement. Dr. McCloskey went way above accommodating. There were several times I had to go out on patrol on a short notice and I was able to make up missed assignments when I returned. Other times he posted exams early so that I could take them before leaving on patrol. Dr. McCloskey

has been wonderful to work with. I have enjoyed the Blackboard program and did not have any problems with it. The online assignments, labs, and testing worked without a glitch. Thank you and have a great day.
