Boise State Student To Receive Congressional Gold Medal In D.C.

Alexandra Audrey-Rose Crawford, a health sciences student at Boise State University, will receive a Congressional Award for Youth Gold Medal at a June 22 reception in Washington, D.C. Crawford, 19, is the daughter of Michael and Tina Crawford of Boise. She is the previous recipient of Bronze and Silver Congressional Awards in 2003-04 and received the Mayor’s Award for Youth as a high school freshman.

The Congressional Award, the U.S. Congress’ award for young Americans, is open to young people ages 14-23. Participants earn Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Certificates and Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Medals. Each level involves setting goals in four program areas: volunteer public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration. About 170 Gold Medalists are expected to attend this year’s ceremony at 10 a.m. in the Atrium Hall of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

“The Congressional Award has been a wonderful experience all around,” Crawford said. “Because of my struggles with cerebral palsy, I spent a lot of my adolescence worrying about fitting in, keeping up and ‘making it with the crowd.’ Then I started working on the Congressional Award and, with the help of my incredible mentor Simonne deGlee (executive director of the Idaho Alliance of Leaders in Nursing), I found out there was so much more satisfaction to life than being in the popular crowd.”

To earn her award, Crawford volunteered at the Boise Art Museum, St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center, Idaho Elk’s Rehabilitation Hospital and with local underprivileged children.
