Summer DanceFest To Present New Works At Two Concerts

Students who are participating in the 2005 Summer DanceFest will show off their new works during concerts at 7 p.m. Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25, at the Morrison Center Stage II. Tickets will be available at the door. The cost will be $5 general and $3 for students and seniors.

Thirty students from around the West, including Alaska, have been honing their dance skills on the Boise State University campus since June 13. The students, who range in age from 12 to 24, will perform several new pieces choreographed by guest faculty:

• Two jazz pieces: a lyrical jazz piece by Kim Machado and a hip hop piece by Kelli Brown.

• Lauren Edson, who specializes in modern dance, choreographed a big band piece.

• Marla Hansen, associate professor and dance director for the theatre arts department as well as Idaho Dance Theatre, choreographed a neoclassical ballet piece with music by Thomas Newman.

• Molly Beardmore and Gonzalo Valdez will perform a pas de deux, choreographed by Beardmore. Also, other advanced dance students will give performances.

This is DanceFest’s 16th year. The program is sponsored by the Boise State Theatre Arts Department, the Division of Extended Studies and Idaho Dance Theatre. DanceFest is an opportunity for young dancers to work with professional-caliber instructors. The program has been a training ground for dancers who have gone on to the Joffrey Ballet, Ballet Idaho, Idaho Dance Theatre, Lines Company and other distinguished companies.
