Basque festival, gets under way. Boise State University has a long history
with the Basque country and the Basque community, and activities on campus
this week will celebrate that connection and kick off a Basque studies
program that will start in the fall semester. The following activity is planned: Basque Studies program inauguration and reception, 11:45
a.m.-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, Boise State Student Union.
The Basque delegation will arrive at the West door of the Student
Union. Boise State provost Sona Andrews will welcome the
president of the Basque country and his delegation to campus. The
groups will exchange gifts in the north lobby on the second floor
and then proceed to the Lookout Room for an introduction of the
Basque studies program and a formal ceremony. The highlight of the
reception will be the signing of a new Memorandum of Agreement
between Boise State, the Cenarrusa Center for Basque Studies and the
Basque government, followed by comments from Basque Lehendakari
(president) Juan Jose Ibarretxe. Also this week at Boise State: Onati reunion, 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 29,
Student Union Jordan Ballroom. Thirty-one years ago, the first
delegation from Boise State spent a year in the Basque country with late
Boise State professor Pat Bieter, father of Boise Mayor David Bieter. The
group will reunite for the first time. The University Studies Abroad
