News Release July 26, 2005 Cultural Center Seeks Volunteers For 'Tunnel Of Oppression'
Volunteers are needed to help install and staff the Tunnel of Oppression, an interactive display that will be at Boise State on Nov. 1 in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom.
The tunnel, which will be presented by the Boise State Cultural Center, will feature actors, media, props and print. The center hopes to raise awareness of homophobia, racism, domestic abuse, disabilities, homelessness and other social issues.
Volunteers are needed in the following capacities:
• Actors • Guides • Committee members • Set builders • Researchers • Advisers • Designers
The orientation meeting for people interested in volunteering will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 31 in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom.
The Tunnel of Oppression was originally designed by students at Western Illinois University and was recognized with an award from the National Association of College and University Residence Halls in 1995. Since that time, colleges across the nation have brought this program to their campuses. Participants are led through a museum-style series of connected rooms, each of which is intended to help participants feel the effects of various forms of oppression. Participants are challenged to consider how oppression has affected them and their communities.
The Cultural Center is working with several Boise State organizations, including the Volunteer Services Board, Associated Students of Boise State University, Student Housing, Health, Wellness and Counseling, Gender Studies and Student Activities, to bring this important program to campus.
