Boise State's College of Education Unveils New Alma Gomez Mural

The Boise State University College of Education will reveal a new mural during a reception from 9-10 a.m. Aug. 29 on the first floor of the Education Building. The event is free and open to the public.

The mural, Triumph of the Spirit, was created by Alma Gomez, a nationally-known Chicana artist and Boise State retention counselor and adjunct professor.

Gomez said “the intent of the mural is to show Latinos who have made significant contributions to the Latino community and society at large.” Gomez depicted local and regional heroes in the artwork, including Judge Sergio Gutierrez, Cesar Chavez, Frida Kahlo, Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz, Juan Morales and Pablo Neruda, among others.

At the center of the mural is the late Gloria Anzaldua, a Chicana activist and writer. She is surrounded by children. Behind her is the Aztec goddess Coatlicue, the Earth mother.

The mural was commissioned by Boise State’s College of Education, including the Bilingual/ESL Department, the Center for Multicultural Educational Opportunities, the Educational Technologies Department, the Center for School Improvement and the dean of Education. The mural will be displayed on the fourth floor, which houses the bilingual programs.
