News Release September 2, 2005 Guest Lecturer Discusses Applications of Human Genome Project On Sept. 9 at Boise State University “Post-genomic Applications of the Human Genome Project” is the title of a free lecture at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, in Room 106 of the Micron Engineering Center at Boise State University. Phoenix Eagleshadow of the Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering at the University of California-Santa Cruz will present the lecture, sponsored by the Boise State chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Eagleshadow’s lecture will include an overview of the Human Genome Project, current research and future applications, as well as a discussion of the ethical, legal, and social implications of genome research. The lecture is open to the public and may be of special interest to students, faculty and community members in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, philosophy and engineering. Eagleshadow is the outreach and diversity programs coordinator for the UC-Santa Cruz center. She gives presentations on the Human Genome Project to community organizations and high school and college classes. Her interests lie in facilitating understanding of genome research, which is of prime importance to minority and diverse communities. The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Boise State promotes the development of minorities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to achieve educational excellence, economic opportunity and social equality. In the 2004-2005 school year, the university’s SHPE chapter was recognized as the university’s outstanding student organization from among more than 180 student organizations. The lecture Sept. 9 is the first in a series of lecture the club plans to sponsor. SHPE meetings are held Tuesdays at 5 p.m. in the Student Union Building and students from all majors are invited to attend.
