Diverse Perspectives Film Series Features Thought-Provoking Films

Boise State University, in conjunction with Idaho Public Television and Independent Television Service, will present a special screening of the award-winning documentary “Race is the Place.” The film will be aired at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Bishop Barnwell room of the Student Union, and at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 28 on the second floor lounge of BSU West in Nampa. The events, which are part of the “Community Cinema: Diverse Perspectives” film series, are free and open to the public.

“Race is the Place” features African American, Latino, Asian American and Native American authors, performance artists, poets and singers who explore the pain, frustration and humor of racism in America using spoken, sung and chanted word. The one-hour film will be followed by a discussion led by photographer Jesus Gonzalez and muralist Migel Delgado, who will display examples of their art and talk about how they use it as social commentary.

“Race is the Place” is the first in a yearlong series of film to be presented as part of the Diverse Perspectives series. Upcoming films include:

• “Girl Trouble,” 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in Boise and 5:30 p.m. Oct. 19 in Nampa. Three graduates of the juvenile justice system organize to help girls in trouble.

• “Seoul Train,” 5:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in Boise, 5:30 p.m. Nov. 16 in Nampa. A film about North Korea’s underground railroad.

• “Negroes with Guns,” 5:30 p.m. Jan. 17 in Boise, Jan. 18 in Nampa. A film about armed defense during the Civil Rights movement.

• “Troop 1500,” 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21 in Boise, 5:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in Nampa. Mothers in prison for serious crimes form a Girl Scout troop with their daughters.

• “Trudell,” 5:30 p.m. March 21 in Boise, 5:30 p.m. March 22 in Nampa. The biography of Native American activist and poet John Trudell.

• “The Real Dirt on Farmer John,” 5:30 p.m. April 18 in Boise, 5:30 p.m. April 19 in Nampa. An unorthodox farmer leads a community to form an organic farming cooperative.

Each film shown on the Boise State campus will air in the Bishop Barnwell room of the Student Union. The films at the BSU West campus will be shown in the second-floor lounge.

“Diverse Perspectives” is a community engagement project that is in its second year. It is sponsored by the Independent Television Service, Idaho Public Television, and several Boise State groups: Student Activities, the Cultural Center, the Women’s Center and the Martin Luther King Jr. Board.
