News Release September 20, 2005 Boise State Presents Mexican Folk Ensemble Los Cenzontles Boise State will present the Mexican folk ensemble Los Cenzontles at 8 p.m. Oct. 1 in the Student Union Special Events Center. Tickets are $10 general, $5 for Boise State students, faculty, alumni, seniors and children younger than 17 through Select-a-Seat, 426-1494. Los Cenzontles (The Mockingbirds) is a Mexican folk ensemble that celebrates the innovation and imagination of traditional Mexican music and dance, weaving together centuries-old musical traditions with contemporary sounds of the world stage. Under the direction of Grammy-nominated producer Eugene Rodriguez, this group presents authentic and gutsy interpretations of traditional, vernacular and original music in a uniquely personal manner. Based at the Los Cenzontles Mexican Cultural Center in San Pablo, Calif., the group features four distinct styles of regional Mexican music and dance, each with its unique instrumentation and costumes. Los Cenzontles features various styles of music, including traditional mariachi music; Son Jarocho of Veracruz, which is from Jalisco; Tex-Mex Conjunto, which features songs of lost love; and Pirecuas and Sones, from Michoacan. Folk Roots Magazine calls Los Cenzontles an astute contemporary interpretation of folk songs and dances that confirms the maturation of one of the San Francisco Bay areas leading voices. In 2004, PBS began broadcasting the first of four documentaries funded by the James Irvine Foundation, the California Arts Council, and others. In Pasajero, A Journey of Time and Memory, the young musicians of Los Cenzontles accompany their elderly teacher to his pueblo in Jalisco, where they seek a deeper meaning of Mexico and its cultural traditions. -30- Contact: Catherine Allen, Student Activities, (208) 426-1223, callen@boisestate.edu Media Contact: Julie Hahn, University Relations, (208) 426-5540, juliehahn@boisestate.edu
