Artist Caroline Gore to Give Lecture/Workshop Oct. 20

Caroline Gore, an artist and metalsmith, will give a lecture about her work at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Farnsworth Room of the Boise State University Student Union Building. Gore’s appearance is sponsored by Boise State’s Art Department and is free and open to the public.

Gore also will give a workshop, “Kumboo: Gold and More,” from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 22-23 at Boise State’s Art Metals Studio. The workshop is sponsored by the Idaho Metal Arts Guild and the Boise State Art Department. Students will learn how to use the Korean surface embellishment process of Kumboo, which is the application of 24-karat gold foil using hot plates and torches on the surface of depletion gilded sterling silver. Basic soldering and hand-tool knowledge is preferred. To register, call Anika Smulovitz at 426-4060 or e-mail anikasmulovitz@boisestate.edu.

Gore’s latest body of work is called “The Beauty: Poison Series.” Gore uses various media, allowing the concepts within her work to determine material choice. Her works range from large sculptural installations to small body adornments.

“Overall, the work is simply a reflection of my everyday experiences as an observant female living in the United States,” Gore said. “I turn contemplative moments into tangible forms that take on a part of my experience and life process. The act of making allows me to complete my thoughts, and then becomes another step in working through any given experience that I encounter.”

Gore’s work has been published in “1,000 Rings: Inspiring Adornments for the Hand,” and “500 Beaded Objects: New Dimensions in Contemporary Beadwork.” Since 1996, her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
