Boise State University has named Howard
L. Smith as the new dean for the College of Business and Economics.
Smith served as dean of the Anderson Schools of Management and School of
Public Administration at the University of New Mexico for 10 years and
associate dean for four years before returning to the UNM faculty and
serving as director of the Anderson Schools Program for Creative
Enterprise. During his tenure as dean at the University of New Mexico, he
increased the Schools of Management endowment five-fold, increased
tenured-track faculty teaching productivity while reducing teaching loads,
and led the school to be considered one of the top business schools in the
nation. He is also a recognized scholar in the areas of health-care
finance and health-systems management.
I am delighted that Howard will become part of the Boise State University
leadership team, said Boise State Provost Sona Andrews. His experiences,
enthusiasm and expertise ensure the continued grow and development of a
College of Business and Economics that has distinguished itself in its
service to our students, community, region and state.
Howard said working at Boise State as dean was a compelling opportunity
for him.
So many factors point to a promising future - a vibrant community and
business sector; enlightened university leadership by President Bob Kustra
and Provost Andrews; a strong foundation set by Dean Lathen, faculty,
staff and the College's business advisory board; plus an energetic student
body and loyal alumni base. I'm truly fortunate to have the chance to work
with such a fine institution.
Smith formally takes over as dean on June 1, 2006, but will periodically
visit campus to work with the administration, the college and external
constituencies prior to his official appointment date. He replaces Bill
Lathen who has been dean of the Boise State College of Business and
Economics since 1998.
During Lathens tenure he established the Northwest Venture championship,
a business plan competition that draws participants from top universities
world-wide; provided leadership for a $1.5 million cooperative agreement
to enhance capacity at the National Economics University Business School
in Hanoi, Vietnam; initiated the first full faculty exchange with Boise
States Mexican partner school; tripled the revenues received from
fundraising activities; and helped launch the first residential college at
Boise State. Lathen will continue to serve as dean until Smith assumes his
duties.
Smith earned his Ph.D. in administrative theory and health services
administration from the University of Washington, his master of science
degree in comprehensive health planning from UCLA, and his bachelor of
science degree in marketing from San Diego State University.
Smith has been an active consultant both nationally and internationally
and has served on a number of governing boards, including chair of the
Health Care Management Division of the Academy of Management. He has
written six books on prospective payment, staff development, hospital
competition, financial management, strategic nursing management and
reinventing medical practices. He also has published more than 200
articles on health services, organization theory/behavior, and strategic
management topics in various journals.
