News Release October 17, 2005 Boise State University Presents 'Tunnel of Oppression' The Boise State University Cultural Center will present an interactive experience, the “Tunnel of Oppression,” from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Nov. 1 in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom. The Tunnel of Oppression has become a tradition at many campuses around the country since it was first presented at Western Illinois University in the early 1990s. In 1995, it was recognized with an award from the National Association of College and University Residence Halls. Visitors to the tunnel will be led through a museum-style series of connected rooms, each of which is intended to help participants feel the effects of various forms of oppression. The tunnel will feature actors and mixed media to get the message across. Afterward, visitors are invited to talk to on-site counselors from Boise State about the experience, as well as to talk to representatives of the various groups represented in the tunnel. There will be a Social Justice Fair with information booths where visitors can learn more about how to combat oppressive speech and behavior. The Tunnel of Oppression is not recommended for children. To volunteer to work in the tunnel or for more information, contact Ro Parker at (208) 426-4317, (208) 426-1024 (TTY), or rparker1@boisestate.edu. -30- Contact: Ro Parker, Cultural Center, (208) 426-4317, rparker1@boisestate.edu.
