News Release October 19, 2005 Boise State Cultural Center Celebrates Native American Heritage Month The Boise State Cultural Center is celebrating Native American Heritage Month during November with a series of workshops, forums and other events. Native American Heritage Month events include: • “Native Vision: The Navajo Experience in the 1930s and 1940s.” 3 p.m. Nov. 8, Student Union Lookout Room. Free. Presented by Living Voices. “Native Vision” will incorporate theater, video and live interaction to tell the story of a Navajo girl who is exploring her family’s past. The girl struggles to keep her culture alive while attending a government-run boarding school. Her vision of becoming a modern healer in a changing world is brought to life as her community joins enters into World War II. For more information, visit www.livingvoices.org. • Native American Dream Catcher Workshop. 4 p.m. Nov. 11, Cultural Center in the Student Union. Free. Pat Garcia, president of the Intertribal Native Council, will instruct attendees on how to make a dream catcher. Materials provided. Call 426-5950 to register. • Round Table Diversity Discussion. 1 p.m. Nov. 16, Cultural Center in the Student Union. Free. Nancy Eagen of the Women of Color Alliance will facilitate a discussion of the “S” word and its removal from Idaho landmarks. • “The Life of Leonard Peltier.” 7 p.m. Nov. 17, Cultural Center in the Student Union. Free. This movie profiles Leonard Peltier, the American Indian activist whose trial and conviction for the murder of two FBI agents during a shootout on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975 has been widely criticized. • Speak Up Forum: Native American Mascots in Sports. 6 p.m. Nov. 30, Student Union Jordan Ballroom. Free. A panel will discuss the tradition of using Native American mascots for U.S. sports teams. Perspectives will range from opposition of native mascots to acceptance if respectful. Participants are encouraged to join the discussion of this timely topic.
