MONDAY, OCT. 31
“Africa and The World: The Collision and the Aftermath.” Log Cabin Literary Center, 801 South Capitol. 1:30-3:30 p.m. Final installment of a four-part lecture series. Delve into this troubled continent with historian Peter Buhler, chair of Boise State’s History Department. $40 plus Renaissance Institute membership. TUESDAY, NOV. 1
“The Two Faces of Democracy.” The Flicks, 646 Fulton. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. First installment of a four-part lecture series, also on Nov. 8, 15 and 29. In this workshop, participants will analyze and compare the world’s first modern democracy, the United States, with the world’s largest democratic nation, India. Discussion will be led by Dr. Mohan Limaye, a Fulbright scholar and Emeritus Professor in the College of Business at Boise State, and Dr. Ross Burkhart, Chair of the Department of Political Science at Boise State. $40 plus Renaissance Institute membership. The Tunnel of Oppression. Student Union Hatch Ballroom. 10 a.m.-7 p.m. The tunnel, a multimedia performance, is designed to raise awareness of homophobia, racism, domestic abuse, disabilities, homelessness and other social issues. Introduction to Rock Rescue Registration Deadline. Register by 5 p.m. Class runs 4-10 p.m. Nov. 2 at the REC Climbing Wall. This clinic, designed for climbers of all skill levels, will focus on potential emergency climbing situations. Skills covered include: belay escapes, raising and lowering injured climbers, ascending ropes and anchor/rope management at belay stations. Prerequisites: basic climbing skills clinic, belay check, introduction to anchor building or introduction to rappelling. $45. Call 426-1946

Poetry Slam Registration Deadline. Would-be poets are invited to participate in an open slam poetry competition at 7 p.m., Nov. 7 in the Student Union Hatch A and B Ballrooms. Contestants must present an original work from one to three minutes long, and will be judged on composition and performance. Student entrants will compete for $50-$100 in prize money, and alternative prizes will be available for non-students. THURSDAY, NOV. 3
“Frank Church Conference on Public Affairs.” Boise State Campus. 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. This year’s conference, “Global Flash Points: Clash of Cultures,” will feature keynote speaker, Samuel Pisar, an international lawyer and one of the youngest survivors of the Holocaust. Presented in partnership with the Cenarussa Center at Boise State and the Boise Independent School District. Free. Call 426-2941.

“From the Big Bang to the Present and Back Again.” Centennial Observatory in Twin Falls and Bruneau Dunes Observatory near Mountain Home. 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m. This workshop will introduce participants to the latest ideas regarding the beginning, evolution, and ultimate fate of the universe. Tour and discussion will be led by Chris Anderson, coordinator at the Centennial Observatory, and Robert Niemeyer, director of the Bruneau Observatory. $70 plus Renaissance Institute membership.
