A team from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers student chapter at Boise State University captured first-place honors in the society’s regional Academic Olympiad held recently in San Antonio, Texas. The Boise State team now advances to the national competition to be held in Orlando, Fla., in January.

The Boise State team competed against students from universities in Region III, an area that encompasses 11 states in the West and Midwest. The Academic Olympiad covers a broad range of engineering and related material and includes both written and oral questions.

Team members include Heraclio Jaquez, a senior majoring in computer information systems from Rupert, Arturo Garcia, a senior majoring in electrical engineering major from Emmett, Antonio Oblea, a junior majoring in mathematics and electrical engineering from Pocatello, and team alternate, Alba Trejo, a sophomore majoring in respiratory therapy from Idaho Falls.

In addition, Boise State SHPE president Dave Estrada had his abstract, “Design of a Variable Frequency Control System for a Multiple-Phase Free Piston Stirling Engine,” selected for the technical poster presentation at the society’s national conference. Estrada, a junior majoring in electrical engineering, is from Nampa.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Boise State promotes the development of minorities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to achieve educational excellence, economic opportunity and social equality. Last year, the university’s SHPE chapter was recognized as Boise State’s outstanding student organization from among more than 180 student organizations.

Among the group’s proposed outreach activities are plans to establish junior SHPE chapters at high schools in Caldwell and Nampa. In addition, the chapter presents a lecture series. On Nov. 14, SHPE will present a lecture by Artin Der Minassians of the University of California at Berkeley on “Low-Cost Solar-Thermal Electric Power Generation.” The lecture is at 3:40 p.m. in Room 106 of the Micron Engineering Center and is open to the public.
