Boise State Professor
Studies in Germany as Fulbright Scholar
Beret Liv Norman, an assistant professor
in Boise State’s Modern Languages and Literatures Department, has returned
from studying in Germany as a Fulbright scholar.
Norman is the second faculty member at
Boise State to receive a Fulbright scholarship this year; Marcy Newman, an
assistant professor in the English Department, is doing research in Amman,
Jordan.
Norman traveled to Berlin, Hamburg and Leipzig during her three-week stay in
Germany. She was one of 21 participants at a seminar on contemporary German
literature. Norman was able to meet several novelists, essayists, poets and
critics from all over the country.
She also studied the changing education system in Germany. Traditional
German postgraduate education includes a seven-year degree, but universities
are gradually adopting a system that is similar to the bachelor’s and
master’s degree systems of the United States.
Norman is working on a book about the project with her fellow visiting
professors. She also said that she’s carrying the lessons she learned back
to her classroom, and hopes that her experiences will help make the class
more relevant for her students. She took photos with a few of the German
authors she heard, and has plans for their use in the classroom.
“It’s kind of fun that I can say, ‘Here’s me next to the person we’re
talking about,’” she said.
Boise State will host a visiting Fulbright scholar in the spring. Karoly
Nemeth of Budapest, Hungary, will conduct research on certain types of
volcanic eruptions that occurred in this area millions of years ago.
