BSU Talkin’ Broncos Win
Mahaffey Memorial Tournament
Tallying as many points as the second- and third-place teams combined, the
national champion Boise State debate and speech team cruised to victory at
the 75th Annual Mahaffey Memorial Forensics Tournament at Linfield College
in McMinnville, Ore., Nov. 1-13. Twenty-five colleges and universities from
California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington competed at the Mahaffey
tournament, believed to be the oldest continuously hosted invitation
forensics tournament in the nation. Pacific University (Oregon) finished
second, Lewis & Clark College (Oregon) was third and the University of
Oregon placed fourth.
Boise State team captain Kristin Davidson received the Roy Mahaffey
Cup as the tournament’s outstanding speaker. Davidson (senior, Winnipeg,
Manitoba) placed first in Informative Speaking, Poetry Interpretation and
Interpretation of Women’s Oratory. She finished second in both Persuasive
Speaking and Rhetorical Analysis, and along with teammate Miles Stirewalt
(senior, Pocatello) placed fifth in Parliamentary Debate. Davidson earned
nearly one-quarter of the Talkin’ Broncos’ 256 team points.
Katy Jibben (sophomore, Boise), one of several outstanding first-year
competitors on the Boise State team, finished fourth in the Mahaffey Cup
standings with a first-place finish in novice Informative Speaking, a second
in novice Interpretation of Prose and a fourth in novice Persuasive
Speaking.
Other first-place award winners for the Talkin’ Broncos were Jordan Park
(freshman, Idaho Falls), who won top honors in two junior division events,
Informative Speaking and Persuasive Speaking; Wayne Rysavy (junior,
Ramstein, Germany), who won Rhetorical Analysis; and Camille Levi
(senior, Nampa), who placed first in novice Persuasive Speaking.
Other multiple-award winners were Hillary Davidson (senior, Spokane),
who won junior division Interpretation of Prose, placed third in
Interpretation of Poetry, and finished sixth in Interpretation of Women’s
Oratory; France Bevill (senior, Boise), who placed third in both
novice Persuasive Speaking and novice Interpretation of Prose, and fourth in
novice Informative Speaking; Barton Jackson (junior, Eagle), who was
second in Impromptu Speaking and fourth in Informative Speaking; Rick
Martini (junior, Boise), who was second in novice Persuasive Speaking
and fifth in novice Interpretation of Prose; and Eric Selekof
(senior, Boise) who was second in novice Informative Speaking and sixth in
novice Persuasive Speaking. Chad Judy (sophomore, Ammon) finished
second in the junior division of Extemporaneous Speaking and Jessica
Wingett (senior, Boise) added a fourth-place finish in Interpretation of
Poetry to complete Boise State’s scoring in speech events.
In debate competition, the team of Jackson and Judy battled to the open
division finals, but lost a 2-1 decision to Lewis & Clark College to finish
second. In novice division, the team of Martini and Wingett
debated their way into the final round, but also lost a 2-1 decision to a
team from Lower Columbia College (Washington). In the junior division,
Park and Rysavy finished ninth, and Davidson and
Stirewalt placed fifth. Stirewalt, Davidson and Martini
were named to the all-tournament team in debate and Stirewalt was
named outstanding speaker in junior division debate.
The Mahaffey tournament marks the end of fall semester competition for the
Talkin’ Broncos. The team returns to action in January at the Clackamas
College Invitational in Portland, Ore.
