The Boise State University College of Business and Economics, in conjunction with the John and Orah Brandt Foundation, will bring award-winning ABC News correspondent John Stossel to the Boise State campus on Feb. 6.

His lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the Jordan Ballroom of the Student Union Building and is free and open to the public.

Stossel has been co-anchor of ABC News “20/20” since May 2003. He joined the newsmagazine in 1981 and began doing one-hour primetime specials in 1994. Stossel’s specials have earned him uncommon praise: “The most consistently thought-provoking TV reporter of our time” said the Dallas Morning News, while the Orlando Sentinel said he “has the gift for entertaining while saying something profound.”

In addition to longer in-depth reports for “20/20” on subjects ranging from addiction to parenting issues, Stossel is featured in a weekly segment titled “Give Me a Break.” These short commentaries take a skeptical look at a wide array of issues, from pop culture controversies to censorship and government regulations.

In his talk at Boise State, titled “Freedom and its Enemies,” he will discuss the benefits of individual freedom and free markets, and what he’s learned in his 30-year journey from Portland, Ore., consumer reporter to his current job as ABC’s in-house contrarian.

“Liberty is what made America great, yet little by little, Americans are giving up that liberty,” Stossel said.

Stossel has received 19 Emmy Awards and has been honored five times for excellence in consumer reporting by the National Press Club. Among his other awards are the George Polk Award for Outstanding Local Reporting and the George Foster Peabody Award.

In his early years at ABC, Stossel was consumer editor at “Good Morning America.” Prior to that he was a consumer reporter at WCBS-TV in New York City. He began as a researcher for KGW-TV in Portland, Ore. Stossel is a 1969 graduate of Princeton University, with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

The Brandt Foundation pledged a $40,000 annual donation to the Boise State College of Business and Economics in 2004 that created a named professorship and secured funding for an annual lecture series. The inaugural lecture featured Nobel Prize-winning economist James Buchanan.
