Boise State Co-hosts Speaker Series on Urban and Regional Growth

The Boise State University Institute for Urban and Regional Planning and the Idaho District Council of the Urban Land Institute will host a lecture by Jim Heid of UrbanGreen from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the Student Union Lookout Room. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The lecture, “Managing Our Quality of Life: Determining How and Where We Grow,” is the first of a three-part monthly series bringing nationally recognized speakers to campus to address topics of pressing regional concern. Designed to promote discussion among area citizens, the series includes a question-and-answer period following each presentation.

Heid’s presentation will highlight a model for applying smart growth principles in development outside of the urban area (suburban greenfields), and the role of planned communities in a regional strategy. He will bring a national perspective to regional discussions of infill and planned communities.

Heid will also address how growth can pay for itself while contributing to the quality of life in a community. His remarks will be based on the following facts:

  • The U.S. is growing and will continue to grow at strong, if not unprecedented, rates for the next 20-30 years.

  • This growth will generate in excess of 24 million new households, or approximately 1.2 million new homes per year, for the next 20 years.

  • Even with a significant change in policies, land costs and entitlement processes, urban infill will only make up about 20-25 percent of this total new construction.

Heid is a real estate developer, adviser and author whose focus is the creation of new communities that provide a positive contribution to their environment, region and residents. In 2000, he founded UrbanGreen LLC to act as a development partner and adviser to legacy landowners, institutions and land development companies that embrace principles of sustainability. He has more than 20 years of experience in the design and development of new communities and urban infill.

Upcoming speakers in the series include:

  • January 10: Sumner Sharpe, “Using Knowledge to Manage Our Quality of Life: Adding Planning Resources Statewide.”

  • February, date to be announced: John McIlwain, “Attainable Workforce Housing.”

The speaker series is funded by donations to the BSU Foundation. For more information on the series, call 426-3776.
