Boise State Hosts Winter Commencement and Celebration

Boise State will host its fifth winter Commencement at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, in Taco Bell Arena with President Bob Kustra officiating. Doors will open at 9 a.m. No ticket is needed for family and guests to attend.

Parking is free; because of limited handicapped parking, family and friends who cannot walk to the Arena can be dropped off at the front of Entrances 1 and 2, where volunteers will assist them with elevators, etc., while drivers park their cars.

Close to 550 students are expected to attend the ceremony. In all, 1,308 students have qualified for graduation since the May Commencement, earning a total of 1,376 degrees or certificates. Eight students have qualified to earn a doctorate (Ed.D.) in curriculum and instruction, and six of those candidates will receive their degrees at the ceremony.

The Commencement ceremony will include two large screens that will broadcast graduates accepting their degrees so that those sitting farther away from the stage will be able to see individual graduates up close.

The student speaker is Nancy Henke, who is earning a bachelors degree in English, with a minor in history. Henke was a member of the 2005 national championship speech and debate team and was named a Pi Kappa Delta All-American. She is a member of six honor societies and had two papers accepted at undergraduate research conferences, one of which led to a research grant for travel to continue her research on Latina/Chicana dramatic literature.

Prior to the ceremony, graduates and their families are invited to a free pre-ceremony celebration beginning at 8 a.m. in the Bronco Gym, located in the Kinesiology Building across from Taco Bell Arena. Hosted by the Boise State Alumni Association, the event will include a continental breakfast and a professional photographer who will be available to take photos of graduates with classmates and family.

Boise States Student Alumni Association (SAA) will also host a Commencement Relief Station with first aid supplies and other services to meet last-minute needs such as polishing shoes or mending a torn gown. At the SAA booth, graduates may also enter a raffle to win a diploma frame worth $150. For more information about the pre-ceremony celebration, contact the Boise State Alumni Association at 426-1698.

Boise State began hosting winter Commencement in 2001 because of capacity crowds at the May Commencement ceremonies. This Commencement is the 76th overall.
