Two Boise State Professors Appointed to Boise City Arts
Commission
Two Boise State professors have been appointed to the
Boise City Arts Commission. Mayor Dave Bieter appointed Richard Young,
chairman of the Department of Art, and Marcellus Brown, Department of Music
professor, to three-year terms.
Youngs drawings and paintings have been included in exhibitions throughout
the United States, including at the National Open Juried Exhibition in Long
Beach, Calif., the Northwest Biennial Exhibition in Tacoma, Wash., and the
Erector Square Gallery in New Haven, Conn. Previously, he was the director
of Boise States Visual Arts Center. Young will fill out the term left open
by artist Noble Hardesty, who had moved to Chicago.
We are very fortunate to have Richard serve as a board member on the Boise
City Arts Commission, said Julie Numbers-Smith, executive director of BCAC.
He brings a wealth of experience as a working artist and as an arts
educator. This also strengthens the Boise State-City of Boise ties and will
keep us connected and informed. It has been a pleasure working with him in
the past on various projects and we look forward to deepening our
association.
Brown was reappointed to the commission, where he has served since 1998. He
is the director of the Boise State University Symphonic Winds and the
Treasure Valley Concert Band. He previously served as BCACs chair in
2003-2004.
His commitment to the arts in the community and arts education for our
children is nothing short of inspirational, Numbers-Smith said. His
longevity, presence and leadership on the board has driven significant
advancement for the organization and the cultural landscape in Boise. It has
been a pleasure and honor to work with him and continue to deepen City ties
and partnership with Boise State.
The BCAC appointments continue a tradition of partnership between Boise
State and the city. Art education associate professor Kathleen Keys serves
on the citys Visual Arts Advisory Committee, and philosophy assistant
professor Tony Roark sits on the citys ethics committee. BCAC Public Arts
Manager Karen Bubb sits on the selection committee for the Boise State dean
of the College of Arts and Sciences search committee, and Boise State
professors have served on the board of the BCAC since 1982.
