Boise States Global Expressions Series Presents Obo Addy

Boise States Global Expressions Series will present Obo Addy and his ensemble Okropong at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Student Union Special Events Center. Tickets are $10 general, $5 students, Boise State faculty and staff, alumni and senior citizens 55 and older. Tickets are available through Select-a-Seat, 426-1494 or www.idahotickets.com.

Addy is an internationally-known drummer originally from Ghana in West Africa. He has spent his musical career blending the traditional African rhythms of his home country with pop music. He has played in several bands, including Joe Kellys Band, the Ghana Broadcasting Band and the Farmers Council Band. He toured until 1978, when he moved to the United States.

He later founded Homowo African Arts and Cultures, a non-profit organization that helps keep Ghanian musical traditions alive. Addy now teaches at Lewis and Clark College in Portland and teaches extensively throughout the country. In 1996 he received the National Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the first African-born artist to receive the award.

His ensemble Okropong, which will appear with him at Boise State, is focused on traditional tribal music.
