Boise State's McNair Scholars Program Seeks Undergrads for 2006 Cohort

Boise States McNair Scholars Program seeks undergraduates interested in pursuing graduate studies and careers in research and higher education for admission to its fall 2006 cohort.

The McNair Scholars Program serves students from groups underrepresented in graduate education and students who are first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds. Applicants must be members of at least one of the two following groups: low-income, first generation college students or students underrepresented in doctoral programs.

Low-income is defined by annual family income levels set by the U.S. Department of Education. A first-generation college student is one whose parents or guardians did not obtain a four-year degree before the student turned 18.

Students underrepresented in doctoral programs include members of the African-American, Hispanic/Latino or American Indian/Native Alaskan communities. Students also must be a U.S. citizen or have established permanent residency and be enrolled in a bachelors degree program at Boise State. They also must expect to pursue an academic graduate degree culminating in a Ph.D. (not including professional degrees such as M.D., J.D., D.V.M., M.B.A., etc.).

Students also must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or significant academic progress in the last two semesters, and be in their late sophomore or early junior year in their major (including more than 58 units) at Boise State, expecting to graduate around spring 2008.

Applications must be received by April 7; information and application instructions can be found at http://education.boisestate.edu/mcnair  or by calling David Hall at (208) 426-2453 or dhall@boisestate.edu.  Twelve to 15 applications will be selected to begin the two-year program in the fall of 2006.

McNair Scholars Program participants will benefit from a comprehensive array of opportunities and services designed to demystify research and scholarship, familiarize them with the graduate school process and experience, and facilitate a prepared and timely application to graduate programs. The program will help students connect with faculty in their academic fields to facilitate research opportunities, experience the world and culture of academic scholarship, and cultivate meaningful mentor relationships.
