Career Expo Highlights High-demand Professional, Technical Training Opportunities

The College of Applied Technology at Boise State University will hold the Larry Selland Career Expo from 4-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the Student Union Building on the Boise State campus.

The free event is ideal for high school students, mid-life career changers, displaced homemakers and others who are interested in learning new skills in a training program that can be completed in 4-24 months.

Those who attend will discover a number of job training options that lead to high-paying jobs in areas such as construction, manufacturing, electronics, real estate, health care, child care, horticulture, culinary arts, office occupations, accounting, marketing, automotive, diesel, motorcycle repair and many other career fields.

“We have more than 400 local employers who partner with us each year and want to hire our graduates even before they complete their programs,” said Larry Barnhardt, dean of the College of Applied Technology.

For example, a welder who completes the program can start work at $18 an hour. A plumber apprentice may make $10 hour to start, but after four years he or she can be earning $50,000 a year. Automotive technicians start at $15 an hour.

The expo features a number of interactive booths staffed with instructors, students and employers who will answer questions and present live demonstrations throughout the event. Parents are welcome to bring their children; students will play games and provide other entertainment.

Individuals who want to increase specific skills but can only attend school part time, can visit with the college’s Center for Workforce Training, which offers evening non-credit classes and more than 400 online, non-credit program options. Sessions on financial aid, admissions and lesser-known educational funding sources will also be presented.
