Panel to Examine Chinese, American Health Challenges
As part of its ongoing partnership with Hangzhou Nursing
College, Boise State University is hosting a delegation of university
officials, including Hangzhou College President Zhang Pei Sheng and Vice
President Jiang Xiu Fang, for a weeklong visit. The Chinese college is in
the process of implementing a new bachelor of science program in nursing.
The delegation members are in Boise to observe classroom instruction, learn
how to integrate students into a clinical setting and better understand how
to manage their program.
The delegation will participate in a free panel discussion titled “Health
Challenges: Chinese and American Perspectives” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7,
at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center’s Anderson Center, Ada 2 Room (fifth
floor). The public is invited to attend to learn more about how both
Chinese and American health-care systems are responding to challenges such
as the deadly bird flu. The event is sponsored by Boise State, the Idaho
Nurses Association and the Boise State Student Nurses Association.
The Chinese have been refining herbal remedies and practicing other
traditional health care — such as acupuncture, cupping or massage therapy —
for centuries. These and other staples of Chinese medicine are currently
experiencing worldwide popularity as they prove effective in countering some
of the toxic side effects associated with such Western regimens as
chemotherapy and radiation treatment, among others. But modern woes such as
air pollution, tuberculosis, HIV, bird flu and obesity have Chinese
practitioners searching for newer and better ways to treat patients.
