Boise State Talkin’ Broncos Come From Behind to Win Arizona

The Boise State debate and speech team rallied from third place on the final
day of competition to win the Arizona Forensic Fiesta Swing, hosted by
Arizona State University and Glendale Community College February 10-12. The
Talkin’ Broncos won the combined sweepstakes award with 165 team points,
edging runner-up Cal-State Long Beach (162 points). Arizona State finished
third (144 points) and the U.S. Air Force Academy was fourth (141 points).
Colleges and universities from Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas,
Kentucky, New Mexico and Texas competed at the tournament.
Boise State’s co-captains, Barton Jackson (junior, Eagle) and Katy
Jibben (junior, Boise), led the way for the Talkin’ Broncos. Jackson
placed first in Persuasive Speaking, third in Extemporaneous Speaking, fifth
in Informative Speaking and was also named the tournament’s outstanding open
division debater. Jibben placed first in Speech to Entertain, second in both
Program Oral Interpretation and junior division Informative Speaking, and
third in Persuasive Speaking.
Camille Levi (senior, Nampa) earned top honors in junior Prose
Interpretation, a second place in junior Poetry Interpretation and fifth
place in junior Persuasive Speaking. Boise State’s season scoring leader,
Kristin Davidson (senior, Winnipeg, Manitoba), added a second-place
finish in Persuasive Speaking, a third in Informative Speaking and a fifth
in Rhetorical Analysis. Jordan Park (freshman, Idaho Falls) finished
first in Junior Informative and fourth in Speech to Entertain, and
Francie Bevill (senior, Boise) placed first in junior Poetry
Interpretation. Wayne Rysavy (junior, Ramstein, Germany) was second
in junior Impromptu Speaking and sixth in Rhetorical Analysis and, along
with Jackson and Eric Selekof (senior, Boise), was named to
the all-tournament debate team.
The Talkin’ Broncos travel to Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash.,
in two weeks to defend their title at the Great West Regional Tournament.
