Alan Thein Durning, founder and executive director of the
Seattle-based Northwest Environment Watch (NEW), will present the keynote
address, “Idaho Sustainability: What Will It Take?” at 7 p.m. Friday, March
3, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom at Boise State University as part of
the Idaho Environmental Education Summit.
Durning’s talk is free and the public is invited. It is presented by Boise
State’s Department of Biology and by Sustainable Idaho, a non-profit
organization that promotes understanding and adoption of sustainable
practices in Idaho.
In his lecture, Durning will report on where Idaho stands on seven key
indicators critical to the region’s future, according to NEW’s “Cascadia
Scorecard.” He’ll also detail ideas for sustainability in the Northwest,
from creating livable cities and improving health to shifting taxes to
discourage pollution.
Durning spent eight years as a senior researcher at Worldwatch Institute
prior to founding NEW, a research and communication center that promotes a
sustainable economy and way of life in the Pacific Northwest. He has
authored or co-authored numerous books, including the award-winning volumes
“How Much is Enough?” and “This Place on Earth: Home and the Practice of
Permanence.” Most recently, Durning co-authored the 2005 edition of the
“Cascadia Scorecard: Seven Key Trends Shaping the Northwest,” with a focus
on energy.
The Idaho Environmental Education Summit 2006 will draw more than 200
educators, students and other interested people from throughout Idaho to
Boise State March 3-4 for discussions, field trips and presentations. The
theme for this year’s conference is “Esto Perpetua: How Do We Learn
to Sustain Idaho?”
