Boise State Nursing Department Recognized for Safe Patient
Handling Training
The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health Study has awarded
Boise State University’s Department of Nursing with its Educator Award for
Safe Patient Handling. Boise State will receive the award at NIOSH’s sixth
annual Safe Patient Handling and Movement Conference in Florida. Boise State
faculty members Rosemary Macy (left) and Dawn Weiler will receive the award
on behalf of the department.
Boise State was one of 26 schools from around the country to develop and
introduce the Safe Patient Handling and Movement training module in its
nursing curriculum. The most up-to-date safety equipment, including
ceiling-mounted lifts, standing lifts and lateral movement assist devices
are now in use in Boise State’s clinical nursing labs. Student, faculty and
community partners have been educated on the latest innovations in safe
patient handling technology that will decrease staff and patient injuries.
Training opportunities will continue into the next academic year. Boise
State’s Department of Nursing will host a six- to eight-hour continuing
education program focusing on safe patient handling for health care
practitioners throughout the community. The project is jointly sponsored by
the American Nurses Association and the National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health.
