Boise State Construction Management Student Teams Take First and Second at Regional Competition
First place team in Heavy Civil Division advances to national competition in Dallas

Student teams from Boise State University’s Department of Construction Management took first and second place at the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Inter-Scholastic Regional Competition and Conference held recently in Reno, Nev.

Boise State took first place in the Heavy Civil Division and second place in the Commercial Division. In addition, Sonny Williamson, a sophomore majoring in Construction Management, received the best presenter award in the Mechanical Division.

Students from the Heavy Civil Division team will now advance to the national competition to be held in April in Dallas, Texas.

“We’re proud of all our students who put forth significant time and effort above and beyond their normal coursework to participate in this extremely competitive event,” said Rebecca Mirsky, chair of the Department of Construction Management.

This year’s competition was the 19th consecutive running of the largest competition for construction students in the world. More than 450 students from 14 universities attended, along with 90 faculty who participated in conference proceedings while students were working on their problem solutions. Universities represented included Colorado State, Arizona State, the Air Force Academy, Brigham Young University and a number of others.

“The competition provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their knowledge before industry professionals and it gives educators a chance to network with industry,” said Charlie Gains, a construction management professor at Boise State and ASC vice president.

According to Gains, each six-member student team comes to the competition prepared with the tools of a real construction company including cost and materials reference books, computers with construction software, and most importantly, their own construction process knowledge.

At 6 a.m. all the teams get the specifications, plans, data, proposal rules and problem statement. The students then have 18 hours to develop their solutions, methods, planning, costs, and proposal to proceed with the project. The construction industry judges review the students’ written solutions and oral presentations to decide which team has presented the most feasible solution.
