Boise State Crowns Annual Science Competition Day Winners

Tynan Smith, a senior at Boise High School, and Eric Johnson, a senior at Timberline High School, were the top winners at the 39th annual Science Competition Day, held Saturday, Feb. 25, at Boise State University. As the grand prize winners, Smith and Johnson will each be offered a four-year renewable scholarship to Boise State.

The event, sponsored by Boise State and the Micron Technology Foundation, involved nearly 300 high school students from southwest Idaho who participated in a variety of academic competitions on the Boise State campus.

The Science Competition Day exam is a written test that covers biology, chemistry, engineering, geosciences, mathematics and physics. Afternoon activities for Science Competition Day include hands-on design and problem-solving competitions using toothpicks to build load-bearing bridges and earthquake-resistant towers; a computer programming contest; and a team ProbleMATHon where students develop original solutions to challenging math problems.
