Boise State Talkin’ Broncos Win Regional Championship, Finish
Season Undefeated
The Boise State University debate and speech team won a third consecutive
regional championship and concluded the first undefeated season in school
history with a dominating performance at the Pi Kappa Delta Great West
Regional Tournament, hosted March 4-5 by Pacific Lutheran University in
Tacoma, Wash. The Talkin’ Broncos scored 141 team points to easily
out-distance runner-up Albertson College of Idaho’s 112 points. Twenty-one
schools from Arkansas, Idaho, Louisiana, Oregon, Texas and Washington
competed in the tournament.
Boise State won six of the tournament's 12 events. Junior Barton Jackson
(Eagle) paced the Talkin’ Broncos victory, finishing first in both
Persuasive Speaking and Impromptu Speaking, fourth in Speech to Entertain,
fifth in Extemporaneous Speaking and teamed with Chad Judy
(sophomore, Idaho Falls) for a fifth-place finish in Debate. Junior Wayne
Rysavy (Ramstein, Germany) also won two first-place awards, taking top
honors in both Rhetorical Analysis and Impromptu Speaking.
Other top scorers for Boise State were: Kristin Davidson (senior,
Winnipeg, Manitoba), who placed first in Prose Interpretation, third in
Rhetorical Analysis, fifth in Informative Speaking and ninth in Debate;
Jordan Park (freshman, Idaho Falls) who took first place in Speech to
Entertain, second in Informative Speaking, and fifth in Persuasive Speaking;
and Nate Pohl (sophomore, Boise) who placed second in Dramatic
Interpretation of Literature and third in Prose Interpretation. Judy
finished fourth in Extemporaneous Speaking and fifth in Rhetorical Analysis,
and Miles Stirewalt (senior, Pocatello) placed sixth in Rhetorical
Analysis to round out Boise State’s scoring.
In the concurrent tournament for first-year competitors, Boise State's
novice team claimed a second consecutive 2006 Northwest Novice Champions
Award. Boise State's novice team won five events and outscored runner-up
College of Southern Idaho 80 to 69.
Katy Jibben (junior, Boise) lead the novice victory, taking first
place in both Informative Speaking and Program Oral Interpretation, second
in Speech to Entertain, third in Persuasive Speaking and, along with debate
partner Jessica Wingett (senior, Boise), finished seventh in Debate.
Wingett placed first in Poetry Interpretation and second in Dramatic
Interpretation of Literature. Team captain Camille Levi (senior,
Nampa) finished first in Persuasive Speaking, second in both Informative
Speaking and Prose Interpretation and third in Poetry Interpretation. She
teamed with Eric Selekof (senior, Boise) to place sixth in Debate.
Selekof took top honors in Rhetorical Analysis and placed fourth in
Informative Speaking. Francie Bevill (senior, Boise) placed fourth in
both Persuasive Speaking and Poetry Interpretation, and fifth in both Prose
Interpretation and Informative Speaking.
The Talkin’ Broncos’ perfect 2005-06 season included seven team titles. They
won championships at the College of Southern Idaho Invitational, The
Mahaffey Memorial at Linfield (Ore.) College, The Bi-Province Tournament at
Cameron (Okla.) University, The Clackamas (Ore.) College Invitational, The
Arizona State-Glendale Community College Swing Tournament, as well as the
Northwest Novice Championship and Great West Regional crown. Boise State has
won four of the past five Great West Regional tournaments. Pi Kappa Delta,
the national forensic honorary society, sponsors the biennial event. Boise
State’s team currently holds the national championship.
