Boise State to Host Lecture by ‘Art in America’ Editor

Richard Vine, the managing editor of Art in America magazine, will attempt to demystify contemporary art during a lecture at 5:30 p.m. April 13 at the Idaho Historical Museum lecture hall. Vine’s lecture is sponsored by the Boise State University Department of Art’s Visiting Artist and Scholar Program. Tickets are $5, with free admission for all Boise State students with ID.

Vine’s lecture is titled “Why is Contemporary Art So Weird?” His talk will address the factors — historical, socioeconomic, psychological and philosophical — that make many creative works “problematic” for much of the general public.

Vine writes frequently about contemporary art, architecture and design. He holds a Ph.D. in literature from the University of Chicago and previously served as editor of the Chicago Review and of Dialogue: An Art Journal. He has taught at the Studio of the Art Institute in Chicago, the American Conservatory of Music, the University of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, the New School for Social Research and New York University. His articles on art, literature and intellectual history have also appeared in Salmagundi, Georgia Review, Tema Celeste, Modern Poetry Studies and The New Criterion.
