State Geography Bee Friday at Boise State Draws Student
Contestants From Throughout Idaho
Students representing schools from throughout Idaho will gather Friday at
Boise State University for the state-level competition of the National
Geographic Bee. The winner will advance to the national contest to be held
in Washington, D.C. May 23-24.
The public is invited to attend the final round of the state geography bee
at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. Mark Wheeler, Boise
State’s interim vice president for student affairs, will serve as moderator.
The final round will include the 10 winners of preliminary rounds held
earlier that day. A total of 100 students in fourth-eighth grades are
entered in Friday’s contest. The contestants earlier won school or district
bees and then scored among the top 100 on a written test.
An all-expenses paid trip to the national contest in Washington, D.C. will
be awarded to the state winner and an escort. The winner also will receive a
$100 cash prize, second place will receive $75 and third place will receive
$50. In addition, the three top finishers will receive globes.
Since the first National Geographic Bee was held in 1989, millions of
students have competed each year for a U.S. $25,000 college scholarship and
the honor of being national champion. In 1991 David Stillman from Nezperce,
Idaho, won the national contest. He correctly answered the question: What
type of landform is commonly associated with orographic precipitation?
(Answer: a mountain)
The state geography bee is being coordinated by the Boise State Department
of Geosciences and is sponsored by National Geographic and JPMorgan Chase.
