Boise State Awards $60,000 in Scholarships to High School Juniors Through Capital Scholars Program

Boise State University has awarded 60 Idaho high school juniors with $1,000 scholarships based on academic achievements for matriculation to Boise State. They were eligible for scholarships with their participation in the Capital Scholars program on April 3. The scholarship fund is endowed by sales proceeds from the Boise State Bookstore.

Selection was based on college entrance examination scores and class rankings. All Idaho high school juniors who scored in the top 10 percent of the ACT, SAT or PSAT and ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school class were recognized as Boise State Capital Scholars, but they had to attend Monday's event to receive their one-time scholarship certificate.

“The Capital Scholars program is designed to keep our top students in state for their college education with scholarship assistance,” said Bob Kustra, president of Boise State University. “Last fall, Boise State welcomed its highest academically qualified freshman class in school history. We are continuing our efforts to attract the best and brightest students in Idaho.”

The Capital Scholars program included a welcome program with President Bob Kustra and professor Greg Raymond; academic showcases with faculty members Eric Landrum and Al Dufty; tours of campus with presentations at the College of Engineering, Morrison Center and Honors College; a reception with the deans; and the awards banquet with Kustra, Provost Sona Andrews, Interim Vice President for Student Affairs Mark Wheeler and recent graduate Nancy Henke as the speakers.

This was the second year of the Capital Scholars program. Beyond the Treasure Valley area, high school students came from Pocatello, Twin Falls, Lewiston, Garden Valley, Payette, Rupert, Iona, Kamiah and Hagerman.
