Award-Winning Correspondent, Author to Speak at Boise State University

Stephen Kinzer, an award-winning author and foreign correspondent, will speak at 7 p.m. April 18 in the Boise State University Student Union Lookout Room. Admission is free. Kinzer’s appearance is sponsored by the Boise State Department of Literacy and the Idaho Peace Coalition.

Kinzer’s lecture, “Overthrow: America’s Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq,” will focus on the United States’ intervention in other governments. Kinzer says that the United States has been overthrowing foreign governments for more than a century, often with disastrous results. He will tell the stories of the interventions, explain why they happened and draw conclusions about lessons for the future.

Kinzer has reported from more than 50 countries on four continents. He has served as the New York Times’ bureau chief in Turkey, Germany and Nicaragua. Before joining the Times, he was the Latin America correspondent for the Boston Globe. His previous books include “All the Shah’s Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror,” “Crescent and Star: Turkey Between Two Worlds” and “Blood of Brothers: Life and War in Nicaragua.” He co-wrote “Bitter Fruit: The Untold Story of the American Coup in Guatemala.” After his lecture, he will sign copies of his new book, “Overthrow: America’s Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq.”
