Boise State Announces Gene Harris Jazz Festival Winners

About 1,000 students from throughout the Northwest participated in the 2006 Gene Harris Jazz Festival student clinics and competitions on April 7 and 8 at Boise State University. The winners were selected by a panel of professional adjudicators. The results were as follows:

Best junior high band intermediate winner:
East Junior High, Boise, Director Nick Clements
Best junior high band novice:
Vallivue Middle School, Caldwell, Director Eric Adamson
Best junior high band advanced:
River Glen Junior High, Boise, Director Karen Danley
Best high school band advanced:
Nampa Jazz I, Nampa, Director Tom Stone
Best high school band novice:
Aberdeen High School, Aberdeen, Director Wayne Millett
Best high school band intermediate:
Hillcrest High School, Idaho Falls, Director Jeff Nelson
Best high school band overall and heavyweight:
Pacific Crest High School, Portland, Director Thara Memory
Best elementary band:
Monroe Elementary, Boise, Director Chuck Smith

In addition to the overall winners, the top bands and soloists each day were selected to perform Friday or Saturday evening before the main concerts in the Bank of America Centre. The winners were:

Friday, April 7
Combo: Centennial High School, Meridian, Director Phil Hartman
Junior High: Vallivue Middle School, Director Eric Adamson
High School: Centennial High School, Director Phil Hartman
Soloists: Keelan Dimick, piano, Rivendell Academy, Eagle; Courtney Despres, bass, Centennial High School; Alecs Bylund, drums, Centennial High School; Owen Magellson, guitar, Wenatchee High School, Wenatchee, Wash.; Daniel Wilkinson, alto sax, Middleton High School, Middleton; tenor sax, Ryan Thomas, Centennial High School.

Saturday, April 9
Combo: Pacific Crest High School, Director Thara Memory
Junior High: East Junior High, Director Nick Clements
High School: Pacific Crest High School, Director Thara Memory
Soloists: The entire Pacific Crest High School band was recognized.

The Gene Harris Jazz Festival included two days of student competitions, three evening concerts and a Sunday gospel concert featuring some of the top names in jazz. For more information, visit www.geneharris.org.
