Boise State Students Present Speech Showcase April 25

Boise State University communication students will present their semi-annual Speech Showcase at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

Each of the eight finalists from preliminary rounds of judging, representative of about 1,000 students taking Communication 101, will present an eight-minute speech to compete for more than $1,500 in scholarship money, as decided by a panel of distinguished judges. Rob Perez, a senior vice-president for U.S. Bank and major underwriter for the event, will judge the event along with Glenna Christensen, and attorney with Moffat Thomas Barrett Rock and Fields Law Offices; Dina Jewell, author and KIDO Radio personality; Jeffrey Stoppenhagen, T-Mobile trainer and assistant Boise State forensics coach; and Autumn Haynes, director of development for Planned Parenthood.

During the judges’ deliberations, interested students’ names will be placed in a hat and five names will be drawn to give impromptu speeches. A separate panel of judges will evaluate this impromptu round and the winner will receive a $50 award.

The department’s goals in sponsoring this event are two-fold: to provide models of and motivate speakers toward speech excellence, and in general to celebrate successful communication in the public sphere.
