Documentary of Dalai Lama Children's Day Event Premieres April 30

A documentary of last fall’s Dalai Lama Children’s Day created by Boise State University student filmmakers will premiere April 30 at Boise State. “His Holiness the Dalai Lama Children’s Day ‘Event’” will be shown at 1 p.m. in the Special Events Center. Additional screenings are at 2:30, 3:45 and 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and free to children under 18 and Boise State students with ID. Free activities will be available at the Student Union Games Center following each screening for people presenting movie ticket stubs.

A special opening ceremony will accompany the 1 p.m. premiere showing, which will be sign language interpreted. Highlights of the event include a guest speaker; Charya Nritya, a rare sacred Nepalese dance conducted by LiAnne Takeuchi Hunt; the song “The Heart of Every Child” performed by Annie Bulow, Sarah Oneida and Marrissa Jerome, accompanied by Rex Miller (this song was performed during the Dalai Lama’s Idaho visit); and a ceremonial blessing by the nuns of Tinh Thuu Thien Tu Vietnamese Buddhist Temple.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited with Idaho children Sept. 12, 2005. The film highlights his appearance on Children’s Day as well as some of the children who were blessed and honored by him. Honorees were selected to meet with the Dalai Lama by Gov. Dirk Kempthorne, who also appears in the film. The film is presented by student filmmaker Saandra Steinfelt and adjunct professor and filmmaker Jesse Cordtz, in conjunction with Sun Valley businessman Kiril Sokoloff, founder of the Idaho Compassion Foundation.

Steinfelt and Cordtz are completing a longer documentary titled “Idaho’s Compassionate Children,” which follows some of the children honored by the Dalai Lama over an eight month period. Stories include a young girl who helps out in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, a child dedicated to building wells in Africa with the Small Village Foundation, and a girl who earns her own money to support a 5-year-old child in Africa. The final scene of the film will be shot at 3 p.m. April 28 at the Anne Frank Memorial in Boise. It will feature a ceremony dedicated to the planting of a tree blessed by the Dalai Lama and will include some of the honorees. First Lady Patricia Kempthorne is also expected to attend.

The filmmakers plan to enter “Idaho’s Compassionate Children” in next year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Event sponsors include the Boise State Cultural Center, Student Union and Dead Eight Film Club, UTP, TVTV, Treasure Valley Community Center, A Window to the World Productions and the Idaho Compassion Foundation.
