This Week at Boise State
The following are upcoming events at Boise State
University for the week of April 23-29. Please note that all events are

EXHIBITIONS
Through April: “O Canada: An Exhibit of Canadian Books.” Books by
Canadian authors and on Canadian topics will be on display in the windows
outside of Special Collections on the second floor of the Albertsons
Library. Books highlighting the carvings, prints and sculptures of Haida
artist Robert Davidson will be featured. 8 a.m.-5 p.m, daily. Free. Call

Through April: “Peephole: Bachelor of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition.”
Liberal Arts Building Gallery I and Hemingway Center Gallery II. 10 a.m.- 6

Through May 10: “Contribution: Essence of Life.” Student Union Art
Gallery, 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. This juried exhibition, presented in
partnership with Boise State and the Suicide Prevention Action Network of
Idaho (SPAN), features works in all media, including music, theater,
literature, painting, illustration, sculpture and photography. Free. Call

SUNDAY, APRIL 23
Symphonic Winds Concert. Morrison Center. 4 p.m. This performance by
the Boise State Symphonic Winds features “Symphony No. 2” by Frank Ticheli
and music from Tielman Susato’s “Danserye.” Contact the music department at

MONDAY, APRIL 24
Volunteer Recognition Banquet. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 6 p.m.
The Boise State Volunteer Services Board honors outstanding individual
volunteers and community agencies. Contact Amber Wendt at 426-4240 for

SPB Films. Student Union Lookout Room. 7 p.m. Join the Student
Programs Board for a screening of “The Invisible Children,” a documentary
about child abduction and conscription into guerilla warfare in Africa.

TUESDAY, APRIL 25
Take Back the Night 2006. Various locations across the Boise State
Campus and the Flicks Theater, 646 Fulton Street. This annual event, hosted
by the Boise State Women’s Center, is designed to raise awareness about
violence against individuals, particularly women. Activities include a rally
at the Boise State Centennial Amphitheatre featuring Boise Police Chief Mike
Masterson at 5:30 p.m., a screening of the film “Searching for Angela
Shelton” at 7 p.m., and a student event, “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes at 10
a.m.” Co-Sponsors for Take Back the Night include Planned Parenthood of
Idaho, Boise State Health, Wellness and Counseling Center, Idaho Coalition
Against Sexual and Domestic Violence, Boise State Student Code of Conduct
Office, Women’s and Children’s Alliance, Idaho Women’s Network, Men Today
Men Tomorrow, Boise State Student Housing, and the Organization for Gender

Nutrition and Weight Management Consultation. Student Recreation
Center Fitness Testing and Wellness Room. 4:15 p.m.- 5:15 p.m. Participants
are invited to drop by and speak with qualified staff about nutrition and

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26
Vocal Jazz Solo Night. Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, 4903 Overland Road. 5-8
p.m. Join the Boise State Vocal Jazz Choir for an evening of solo

Student Organization of the Year and Campus Recognition Ceremony.
Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 6 p.m. This event, dedicated to honoring
outstanding student organizations, is free and open to the public. Free

Theatre Showcase. Morrison Center Stage II. 7:30 p.m. Enjoy an
eclectic evening as the Boise State Theatre Major’s Association takes over
Stage II and produces its own brand of contemporary theater. $7; $5 for

THURSDAY, APRIL 27
Jeanne Wakatsuki Lecture. Student Union Lookout Room. 7 p.m. Jeanne
Wakatsuki Houston, a former resident of the Manzanar Japanese internment
camp in California, presents an account of her experiences. Sponsored by the
Department of History, College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs,
Cultural and Ethnic Diversity Board and the Cultural Center. Free and open

MFA Reading Series. Hemingway Center. 7 p.m. Author John Keeble
presents a reading of his work as part of the Boise State MFA Reading
Series. Keeble is the author of four novels, including “Yellowfish” and
“Broken Ground.” A fifth novel, “Guide to Insurrection,” is in the works. A
collection of his stories, “Nocturnal America,” is a winner of the Prairie
Schooner Award Series in fiction and will be issued in the fall. Free and

Tuba Euphonium Concert. 7 p.m. April 27 in the Morrison Center
Recital Hall; 7 p.m. April 29 in the South Junior High School Auditorium,
805 Shoshone. The Tuba Euphonium Mass Ensemble features more than 50
players, including Boise State tuba professor Michael Fischer and University
of Oregon tuba professor Michael Grose. Free. Call 426-3980 for more

FRIDAY, APRIL 28
Collaborative Student Recital. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 5 p.m.
Student vocalists Kristin Vanderstelt, soprano, and Amy Wickstrom,

Percussion Ensemble. Morrison Center Room B-125. 7:30 p.m. This
program features a three-movement piece based on the whole-tone scale made
famous by Debussy, “Kotrah,” a snare drum solo and “Parading Parrots,” a

Music Week School Night. Taco Bell Arena. 7:30 p.m. This event
features more than 1,500 instrumental and vocal students, ranging in age
from elementary to high school. Presented as part of Music Week 2006. Free.

Meistersingers Season Finale. St. Michael’s Episcopal Cathedral, 518
N. 8th Street. 7:30 p.m. The Meistersingers finishes its year with a
celebration of diversity in a kaleidoscope of languages, including French,
Finnish, Hebrew, Spanish, Mongolian and Tiriki. $5; $3 for Boise State

ancient Chinese discipline designed to teach participants how to mirror the

Relay For Life. Bronco Stadium. 6 p.m. May 5, 8 a.m. May 6. At this
overnight relay, teams of people alternate walking or running laps to raise
money for the fight against cancer. This event represents the hope that
those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer
will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated. For more

SATURDAY, MAY 6
Spring Fling. Julia Davis Park. Noon-9 p.m. The Student Programs
Board invites the campus community to take part in this year’s Spring Fling.

Holiday, food vendors, a jump house and other family-friendly activities.

“Doing Time, Doing Vipassana.” Special Events Center. 6:30 p.m.
“Doing Time, Doing Vipassana” is a remarkable 52-minute documentary that
profiles how Kiran Bedi, India’s inspector general of prisons, brought
Vipassana, a therapeutic ancient meditation technique, to India's Tihar
Prison. An open discussion follows the film. Free and open to the public.
