Boise State University President's Writing Awards Honors 13
Students
Thirteen Boise State University students will be honored with the
President’s Writing Awards during a ceremony at 4 p.m. April 28 in the
Hemingway Center. President Bob Kustra will personally hand out the awards
to the recipients, who competed against more than 60 students for the honor.
The contest, which is directed by the English Department, recognizes
superior writing in the following categories: personal essay, critical
analysis, opinion, research-based, technical communication, unit design, and
a freshmen-only category. Cash prizes are given to both the first- and
second-place winners. This year’s winners are:
• Personal Essay: First place, Nicole Cullen, “My Father Dying: An Album of
Small Deaths and Rebirths.” Second place, Christy Claymore, “Handprints on
the Ceiling.”
• Critical Analysis: First place, Nicole Christianson, “Visiting St.
Dorothea’s Tomb.” Second place, Aaron Miller, “Meditations on Integration.”
• Research Essay: First place, Vivianne Sanchez, “The Collective Approach to
Frida Kahlo.” Second place, Eunice Alexander, “Berthe Morisot — A Lady of
the Nineteenth Century.”
• Freshmen Only: First place, Choya Davis, “The Most Important Substance of
All Time.” Second place, Elizabeth Russell, “Fear.”
• Technical Communication: First place, David Rich, “Whirlwind, Inc. —
Feasibility Study.” Second place, Ericka Larson, “Ann Morrison Apartments —
Poster.”
• Unit Design: First place, Rebecca Dodge, “Poetry Integration.”
• Opinion Paper: First place, Taylor Newbold, “Angry T-Shirt: The Reagan
AIDS Years.” Second place, Daniel Yelm, “Should Gang Violence Be Prosecuted
More Severely?”
